Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do we apply for our marriage licence, and what happens after the ceremony?
A. You can find a link to apply for your marriage licence in the Useful Links section of my website. Once you have received your marriage licence and supporting documents, please forward them to me before your wedding day. I will bring the documents to your ceremony for signing by you, your witnesses, and myself. After the ceremony, I will submit the signed paperwork electronically to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM) office for processing.
Q. How long does the ceremony take?
A. I understand that every couple has a schedule and timeline for their wedding day. The length of your ceremony will depend on the package you choose and the elements you would like included.
Generally, most ceremonies are completed within an hour, with many lasting between 20 and 45 minutes.
Q. Can you help us write our vows?
A. Absolutely. I can provide a range of sample vows that you can use as they are, or as inspiration for creating your own personalised vows. If you're finding it difficult to put your feelings into words, I am happy to offer guidance and support to help you write vows that are meaningful, personal, and truly reflect your relationship.
Q. Travel Costs to Your Venue
A. For weddings held outside of Hamilton, a travel fee may apply. Travel costs are calculated using the current Inland Revenue Department (IRD) mileage rate and will be discussed with you in advance, so there are no surprises.
Q. Can you play our music?
A. Absolutely. Simply provide your chosen songs or a playlist and I can play your music through my speaker during the ceremony. Managing the music myself also allows me to ensure each song is played at the right moment, helping your ceremony flow smoothly and making those special moments even more memorable.
Q. Can you sign marriage documents while a friend acts as our celebrant?
A. Under New Zealand law, a registered Marriage Celebrant must conduct the marriage ceremony and fulfil the legal requirements of the wedding ceremony. However, family and friends can still play an important role in your ceremony. They can share your story, give readings, recite poetry, or offer blessings, adding a personal and meaningful touch to your special day.
Q. Are you understanding and supportive of couples from the LGBTQIA+ community?
A. Absolutely. I am registered to conduct both marriages and civil unions and welcome couples from the LGBTQIA+ community. Every couple deserves a ceremony that reflects their unique relationship and values. I work closely with all couples to create a personalised and meaningful ceremony, tailored to their wishes and celebrated with warmth, respect, and inclusivity.
Q. Do I need a permit for a public location?
A. You may need a permit depending on the location of your wedding. It's always best to contact the local council to confirm whether a permit is required. You can find a link to the relevant council in the Useful Links section of my website. Obtaining a permit not only gives you permission to use the location, but it can also reserve the space for your ceremony, helping to prevent other events from being booked at the same place and time.
